(St. Petersburg, Fla.) November 6, 2008 - Professor of Government and International Affairs Ambe Njoh, PhD, was selected to contribute two chapters and four case studies for the 2009 edition of the United Nations Global Report on Human Settlements.

One of only two scholars from the United States to be selected, 10 authors will contribute. The publication, used by scholars and professionals around the world, is a vehicle for monitoring and reporting on human settlement conditions and trends.

This seventh volume will be devoted to urban planning practices and approaches with the objective of improving knowledge on global conditions and trends. Njoh wrote Chapter 2: Understanding the Diversity of the Urban Context and Chapter 3: The Emergence and Spread of Contemporary Urban Planning.

“The report offers a gauge in terms of where we are with housing around the world,” Njoh said. “It’s a very important issue, both at an international and national level. How housing goes is how the economy goes. Construction is very critical to the economy.”

Njoh joined the University of South Florida St. Petersburg in 1994. His areas of teaching and expertise include research methods and quantitative analysis, urban and regional planning with emphasis on public transportation, housing and spatial structures especially in relation to developing countries.

The author of eight books and more than 30 articles in peer-reviewed journals and books, Njoh’s most recent book, Planning Power (2007) was published by The University College London Press in Collaboration with Routledge (Francis & Taylor). He is the author of several technical reports, articles in conference proceedings and newspapers. Njoh has presented more than a dozen papers at professional conferences throughout the United States, Canada and Africa.

Njoh earned his doctoral degree from the University of London, his Master of Regional and City Planning degree from the University of Oklahoma and his Master of Science degree from The Florida State University. He has a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Design from the University of Oklahoma and a Diploma in Civil Engineering from the Advanced School of Public Works in Buea, Cameroon. Before his university appointment, Njoh was Transit Planning Manager at the Public Transit Office for the Florida Department of Transportation in Tallahassee.
